Playing about on rivers. Nothing much beats this and I am lucky that I get to do this a lot in my job, but the loveliest thing ever is when I get to take the kids with me. It can be stressful getting their mojo engaged, dragging my daughter away from her precious books and my son from his bike but once we have got over this ‘slight’ (ok massive) hurdle it is worth every minute of pain in the build-up….
The water seems to act like a drug and we instantly feel calm and relaxed. Suddenly my two children who an hour ago were behaving like spawns of the devil turn in to charming, chatty and delightful young adults. The change is alarming but very, very welcome. Within minutes they are spotting wildlife, getting excited beyond belief at the flash of kingfisher blue. They also exercise the skill of silence.
We are incredibly lucky to live where we live with direct access pretty much from our house onto the River Wye. Within 15 minutes we can be on the river, and at this time of year it doesn’t take long for the kids to be in the water.
Canoeing and the River Wye go hand in hand, we have been part of our local canoe club Wyedean Canoe Club since we moved here and this has enabled us to learn, develop and hone our skills. It has given me the platform to get my qualifications which means that I can happily take the kids out on a trip. However for many this isn’t possible and it may seem that canoeing is out of reach for you. BUT IT ISN’T!
We have lots of fantastic canoe hire companies here on the River Wye so there is no excuse not to give it a go. There are also lots of canoe clubs all over the country in the most unexpected places where you can go along and learn the basics. You can then start to access parts of the country that were out of reach such as lakes, canals, rivers and the sea. Go on, do it, if not for you then for your family. You will never regret it!
