Mountain Leader Training led to many things; great new friends (who I MUST arrange a weekend away with very soon), lots of new skills (which I need to practice….a lot) and really, really ouchy feet. My faithful Scarpa boots were too small and I needed new walking boots….
For me, like most people the chance to go shopping is met with glee and giddiness. However, getting new walking boots is almost as painful a chore as the actual blisters and sores I got from walking in the wrong boots. It is not easy. But, after many trips to a variety of professional outlets where I was able to get fitted by people who really, and I mean REALLY know what they are talking about I ended up with my beautiful new Meindl Burma’s.
When I showed my husband his first question was ‘and how much were they?’ to which I answered ‘umm they were the most expensive boots I tried on but……’ at this point I got the single raised eyebrow. Yes they were the most expensive but they were also the most beautifully crafted and superior boot as far as I was concerned. I wanted single piece leather with a full rand and I really only had about 3 options. I tried them all on, in different sizes, with different combinations of inserts but I just kept coming back to the Meindl’s. They were just ‘right’. It’s a bit like when you are viewing houses and you just know that this is the house for you, it was the same feeling with these boots. For those of you who are considering new boots you really must go to a reputable outlet and try lots of boots on with a fitter who really knows there stuff. After all this is an expensive piece of kit so get it right! The Saturday kid will not get offended if you ask for someone else, at the end of the day the shop wants a sale and they need a happy customer, especially in this day of online reviews.
I bought my Meindl Burmas from Cotswold Outdoor, Grasmere after going to two local outdoor shops and three other Cotswold Outdoor shops. I wanted to be
