Pretty much everyone knows the iconic view of the River Wye from Yat Rock at Symonds Yat. It is regularly featured as one of the top destinations and views in the country. Yet, the part that everyone misses is what this image is actually a view over: Coppet Hill. This little known hill has big aspirations and is not only a stunning nature reserve but was also used as a location for Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows. But, the best bit is that this little hill is just 5 minutes from my house and provides some stunning walks..........read on for more 'keeping it local' inspiration.
It's hard enough sometimes just managing day to day life when you have anxiety let alone Christmas. One of my triggers is having people come to my house; be it for a cup of tea, glass or wine or, god forbid a meal, or a party (a little bit of sick just came up then). So, what can we do to make this time of year go a little more smoothly? Apart from going on holiday to India for two weeks!?
Some days can be brilliant, sometimes those days turn into weeks. Then, totally out of the blue, for no apparent reason at all you have a shit day. Most of it is spent wondering why. Why is today a bad day? What happened? Did I eat something different, did I sleep on the wrong side? When actually nothing 'happened', this is what mental health is. In the same way as you can feel physically great for weeks and then get a cold out of the blue, I guess you can be mentally tickity boo and then, out of the blue you feel crap. It is an illness of a lifetime I guess and in time I hope I shall learn to manage it and work through the bad days. I hope so anyway. One day at a time.
It's that time of year again when the in-laws ask for the Christmas List and I always end up putting gardening gloves and Boots smellies because I can never think about what I would really like for Christmas. Well, this year I decided to come up with a list of things at a range of prices which I would not only LOVE to have, but which also fulfil a purpose......
We are hearing more and more in the media about 'stress' and 'anxiety' and how these two things are having a profound impact on people's lives, most commonly professionals.
Many people still assume that if you are diagnosed then you are a 'looney' and will be sitting in the corner of a room 'doing an Arthur' (old reference to EastEnders character Arthur Fowler from the 80's - look it up if you are too young to remember!). Slowly however common sense is starting to prevail and people such as Stephen Fry and Ruby Wax are beginning to raise the awareness of mental health and gradually erase the stigma attached.
But if I am honest I still feel that I am somehow weak because I suffer from stress and anxiety but am I? Really? Stress is just a buzzword surely and what is anxiety anyway?
Keeping it Local...
Every morning I wake up, look out of my window and up the hill towards Chase Woods. This small hill enables Ross on Wye to snuggle gently in to its side and it offers us its protection, an ever changing vista and great walks right from my front door.
The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean is not only an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) but is also, a Site of Special Scientific Interest(SSSI) but it is also my home.
I love to go to the Lake District, Brecon Beacons, Peak District, North Wales etc. walking, but I sometimes forget, as we all do that we have some spectacular walks right on our doorstep. So I have decided to start a feature called Keeping it Local....Walks (almost) From The Front Door.
