It is well known that exercise and being in the outdoors is great for your health and wellbeing, but Doctor's in Biarritz are now prescribing surfing lessons for people who have been diagnosed with depression. So, are we reaching a point where some anti-depressants may be overthrown in favour of outdoor activities?
One of the main reasons for my trip to the Lake District was because I had just been diagnosed with stress and anxiety and the Doctor's said I needed space, time and exercise.
The day we decided to climb Skiddaw dawned and it was blanketed in cloud. Ever the optimists we sallied forth, threw our packs in the cars and set off. We were heading towards the ridge that has beguiled me for many years - Longside Edge. I have wanted to climb Skiddaw this way since I first visited my best friend (who wakes up every morning and looks out the back of her house at the mighty mountain) many years ago. I was beyond excited. Not only was I finally climbing Skiddaw, but I was with my oldest and greatest friend. Someone who really knows the real 'me', not the person I pretend to be in my job, or the person I have struggled to be because I so desperately want to be liked. I had a whole day of just being me and this was liberating.
I have been 'collecting' my outdoor kit for some years and I am now starting to know which brands suit me best and which just don't. I have my favourites but I am a self confessed label junkie and have some need within in me to own at least one thing from every 'big' label. Which I know is ridiculous and I am trying, really trying to move away from this. It's getting easier as I have found that one brand in particular suits me really well and it is one I keep coming back to time after time. And that brand? Read on to find out....
As I drove in to Ambleside the sun was gleaming down through scattered clouds. To say I was excited is an understatement.
