August aside, we have had a pretty spectacular summer. The reason I can state this categorically is that we have been able to swim, regularly. And I don't mean swimming in the local pool, I mean swimming in our local river....
Wild swimming is quite magical; being able to walk from our house down to the river and swim is a joy. Summer evenings have been spent splashing about in the River Wye where we have enjoyed time together as a family.
Wild Swimming is growing in popularity. it is free, available and there are so many options on where you can swim including rivers, lakes and sea. There are so many times when we are out walking that we come across waterfalls, pools, tarns, lakes and rivers where we can imagine swimming. It has almost reached the point where I am actually thinking of taking a travel towel and swimmers with me when I walk. Of course as we head in to the chillier months I may be a little less keen, but I do own a wetsuit so who knows!.
The health benefits of wild swimming are plentiful as described on the the website www.wildswimming.co.uk;-
'Cold immersion soothes muscle aches, relieves depression and boosts the immune system. The long-term impacts are also well researched: NASA studies have shown that, over a 12-week period, repeated cold swimming leads to substantial bodily changes known as ‘cold adaptation’. These bring down blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce fat disposition, inhibit blood clotting and increase fertility and libido in both men and women. Far from quelling passion, a cold shower will boost vitality and desire.'
Not bad huh!? Its got to be worth a go!
